Four soldiers supporting Operation Enduring Freedom died August 1st in Asadabad, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered in when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device:







Spc. Adam M. Wenger, 27, of Waterford, Mich., died Nov. 5 in Tunnis, Iraq, of injuries sustained during a non-combat incident. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 76th Field Artillery, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga. Specialist Wenger had been deployed four times- to Kosovo, Afghanistan and twice to Iraq. He leaves behind his wife, Brandy, and seven children.




PFC Heath K. Pickard, 21 of Palestine, Texas, died Oct. 16 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when he received indirect fire in Baquaba, Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Pickard leaves behind his wife, Sara, and a 5-month-old son, Ethan. Pickard was promoted to Specialist posthumously; Specialist Pickard was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service in Iraq.





Specialist Jason von Zerneck, 33, died on October 2 in Qara Bagh Karze, Afghanistan when his vehicle rolled over during a logistical convoy. He was assigned to B Troop, 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry based in Jamestown, New York.  A National Guardsman, he is survived by his wife, Stephanie, and three children – daughter Raina, age 9, and sons Joseph, and Noah, ages 6 and 3.




Army Ranger Sgt. William P. Rudd, 27, of Madisonville, Kentucky., died Oct. 5th of wounds suffered from enemy small arms fire while on a combat patrol in Mosul, Iraq. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Ga. Rudd was in his eighth deployment in support of the War on Terror with two previous deployments to Afghanistan and five to Iraq. Rudd is survived by his father William Rudd of Madisonville, KY and his mother, Pamela F. Lam of Nortonville, KY.




Staff Sgt. Ronald Phillips Jr., 33, of Conway, S.C., died Sept. 25 in Bahbahani, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga and was on his second tour of duty in Iraq. Sergeant Phillips had been on active duty with the United States Army since January of 1996 and keaves behind a wife and a 7 year old son and 8 year old daughter.



Staff Sgt. Brandon W. Farley, 30, originally of Haworth, Oklahoma, died Sept. 18 at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained Sept. 17 when his mounted patrol was attacked by enemy forces using small arms and rocket-propelled grenades in Able Monti, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Sergeant Farley was described by his family as a fun-loving country boy who was “military all the way,”









Staff Sgt. Darris J. Dawson, 24, of Pensacola, Florida and Sgt. Wesley R. Durbin, 26, of Hurst, Texas died Sept. 14 in Tunnis, Iraq, of wounds sustained in a non-hostile incident. Both Soldiers were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.








Kennith Mayne, 29, of Fort Benning, Georgia and Pfc. Bryan R. Thomas, 22, of Battle Creek, Mich.died on September 4th in Baghdad, Iraq of wounds suffered when their vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.

Both were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Sgt. Mayne spent 11 years in the military and was involved in the original invasion with Operation Iraqi Freedom. Sgt Maynes mother says her son was extremely proud to be a Soldier and that he believed in the work he and the military was doing. Private First Class Thomas was an animal-lover who did volunteer work with the Michigan Humane Society.




Sgt. Michael H. Ferschke Jr., 22, of Maryville, Tenn., died Aug. 10 while supporting combat operations in Salah ad Din province, Iraq. He was assigned to 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan. Sgt. Ferschke had been married about a month and had just found out his wife was going to have a baby. Along with his parents, Michael Sr. and Robin, he is survived by his wife, Hotaru.




Pfc. David J. Badie, 23, of Rockford, IL who was assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

Spc. William J. Mulvihill, 20, of Leavenworth, KS who was assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

Pvt. Jair De Jesus Garcia, 29, of Chatsworth, CA who was assigned to the 6th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

Sgt. Kenneth B. Gibson, 25, of Christiansburg, Va., died of wounds suffered Aug. 10 in Tarmiyah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his position during dismounted operations. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Sergeant Gibson leaves Nikki—his  wife of six years—behind and his parents, Athena and Robert Gibson.





Staff Sergeant Jeremy D. Vrooman of Sioux Falls, SD died on July 15th in Baghdad Iraq during his second tour of duty in Iraq. His father said he wanted to be in the Army ever since he was 14 or 15. "He loved his country and he wanted to serve his country." Sergeant Vrooman saved the lives of two of his comrades during his last mission. He leaves behind his wife, Latrecia; 5-year-old son, Xavier; and 1-year-old daughter, Jade. He was 28 years old. To find out how you can support our military, visit www.helpamilitarywife.com




Staff Sgt. David W. Textor, 27, a native of Jamestown, NY, was killed on July 15 during an enemy attack in Mosul, Iraq. Sergeant Textor volunteered for military service in 2002 as an infantryman and became a Green Beret in 2006. He was a Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha weapons sergeant assigned to Company A, 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne). Only hours before he died, Sergeant Textor leaned forward and kissed a Web-cam image of his wife, whom he was chatting with over the Internet. He leaves behind his wife Colette and five children who live in Olympia, Washington.




Staff Sgt. Danny P. Dupre, 28, originally from Lockport, La., died July 15 from wounds sustained while supporting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C and served four overseas deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sergeant Dupre is survived by his wife, Crystal Dupre and son, Daniel Dupre of Jacksonville, Florida.
